Re:      CWPAA comments on General Permit for Wastewater

Discharge from Food Preparation Establishments

Dear Ms. Bolton:

The Executive board of the Connecticut Water Pollution Abatement Association (CWPAA) supports the proposed Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (CTDEP) “General Permit for the Discharge of Wastewater Associated with Food Preparation Establishments”. The General permit will assist in eliminating Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO) caused by the discharge of the Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) into the sanitary sewer collection system. FOG has been identified as a major source of blockages and SSOs within sanitary sewer systems.  As a result, SSOs  have had significant impacts on the environment and municipal operating budgets for preventive and emergency maintenance of the collection system.  This program appropriately removes FOG at its source. The CTDEP has responsibly prepared a comprehensive program with guidance and resource documents to assist communities to implement this important and necessary program.

Sincerely,

Carl Almquist,

President CWPAA
